Dissect My Brain EXTRA #1: "The Buzz"

SPECIAL GUEST WRITER/ARTIST: Blaine Jarnagin.

Can I properly give this commentary? Probably not. I did not write this nor did I draw this. However, I will attempt to do this justice. It's certainly a well-liked strip on the Internet, and possibly the closest thing to a superhero book you'll ever get from this comic.

First off, this is written and drawn by a near and dear friend by the name of Blaine Jarnagin. His comics credentials are in the strip, Baby Nina, which has also been published in CSULB's newspaper, The Union Weekly. (There was one in the Valentine's Day issue!) He also wrote and drew a really damn good comic called The Boarman, which I think is a shame he hasn't released it. When I started doing Dissect My Brain, I brought him on board to be sort of a "checks and balance" editor to make sure I'm not doing anything too crazy. Somewhere along the line, I asked him to do a strip, and this is what he produced.

Now, on to the strip itself: I really wish I could've done a preceding strip that explained The Buzz or that I wear weird costumes to set up readers to this. This strip is inspired in that I do wear costumes on occasion, but overall, it's mostly fiction. It's an interesting take, especially when you compare it with the strip in which wrote Blaine. You can certainly see the differences in approaches: Blaine's story is in the situation (Dirty otaku wears costumes to satisfy his own obsession with self-eccentricity; what's weird about this?), whereas, I rely on characterization and dialogue. (People talk, and their words say something about themselves.) Blaine's comic has more of the "Sunday strip" atmosphere, and I'm more of the indie, "slice-of-life" kind of guy.

On a final note, it's Blaine's take. Most people who know me knows this comic sounds nothing like me. I think I'd have more to say if I were asked, "Have you ever thought about being a superhero?" However, I respect the effort, not a snob to the point that I'd completely reject it, and appreciate the take since it took time to make a thing. It wouldn't be a guest writer/artist spot if it wasn't drastically different from what I would normally do.
